: Message From The Principal

 
 

Dear Visitor,
Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabunder is situated about 7 kms. away from Mayabunder town which is the only premier institute of higher education in the District of North and Middle Andaman. Its sphere of activity and catchment area ranges from Paschimsagar of Diglipur to Baratang encompassing a large chunk of territory and majority population. Initially started at Car Nicobar in the year 1990 and shifted to its present place in the year 1994. In a sprouting campus of 34.866 acres eco-friendly atmosphere, enchanting sea and virgin forest view, the college is the attraction not only to the students but also a great chunk of tourists and visitors who go to Karmatang via college road. Initially started with a meager students of less than 100 but now it has increased its strength upto 525 with 41 teaching staff, more than 30 non-teaching staff and 32 supporting staff. The college now imparts facilities for Degree Courses in six main streams. They are: B.com. (Commerce), B.Com(Co-operative Management), B.A.(Economics), B.A.(Historical Studies), B.A.(Political Science), and B.Sc.(Geography)

The campus starts with a bronze statue of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi which is a source of inspiration to all students and staff. The statue is surrounded by different types of flowers and other ornamental plants which give an esthetic sense to students, staff and visitors when they enter the college. The college is having one Administrative building which gives place to Principal, Visitors Room, P A to Principal, Office, all the Heads of the Departments, Ladies Common Staff Room, Gents Common Staff Room, Admission and Examination Wing, Computer Lab, Geography Lab, Stores, Record Room, NSS Unit IGNOU Study Centre and many other allied rooms utilized for academic and cultural pursuits. Besides there is adequate triple storied library having full amenity such as reading room, reference and issue section and a seminar room. A well established and well furnished conference room equipped with modern accessories accommodating 80 is ready for use.

We have also a well equipped Computer Lab for examination and learning as this college aims to provide 100% computer literacy to its students and staff. We have also a well furnished Auditorium having the capacity of more than 500 in one sitting which caters the need of the students for cultural functions and also for inter-departmental debate discussions and examination. Attached to the auditorium there is a well equipped Sports Centre with Multigym, Trade Mill and other modern equipments to cope with the students' desire. The college is also having a well furnished Canteen which is given on contract basis. One of the achievements of this college is having sufficient staff quarters and earmarked Principal's quarters which caters the needs of employees who want to stay in the campus. Amenities like water, electricity, cleanness have been maintained which creates a congenial working atmosphere for the staff as they develop affinity by staying together. The college is also having two standard separate Hostel Buildings for Boys and Girls which caters the needs of all the students who desire to stay in the hostels. The indoor games centre which is popularly known as Gym Centre is well maintained with all types of indoor games such as Carom. TT, Badminton, Chess which are played by sufficient number of students everyday under the guidance of the Associate Professor of Physical Education. The Gym is also a special attraction for the students with Tread Mill etc.

To be a Model College in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that provides cheap, accessible and affordable education and to create excellence in higher learning and teaching and promotion of enlightened, disciplined and egalitarian society through dynamic teaching, learning and extension.

  • The estimated strength of the college is expected to be 3000.
  • Number of faculty and other supporting staffs required around 150 for which post to be created.
  • Additional blocks of both hostels having minimum capacity 300 each to be constructed.
  • Minimum 50 quarters of different categories Type II, III, IV, V to be constructed.
  • Playground with mini stadium to be raised.
  • Additional of 72 classes to be constructed.
  • New administrative building to be constructed.
  • Laboratories, faculty rooms, recreation room, canteen, indoor game room, bank, post office, medical inspection rooms to come up phase wise.
  • VSAT for providing internet for each and all.
  • Computer lab to be constructed according to demand from time to time.
  • Smart classes to be started phase wise.
  • Additional library blocks need to come up with increase of the students.
  • Modern furniture’s to be procured.
  • Adequate buses to be procured for days scholar.
  • Grocery and stationary shops on cooperative basis should be open in the campus.
  • New auditorium as per the student’s strength with multi-stories should be kept in the plan provision.
  • Post graduate classes and job oriented courses should be opened.
  • After credible achievement college should be given autonomous status and in the next phase conversion of the autonomous college into rural university.
  • Water reservoir and more capacity water tanks for college and hostels.
  • Electric substation in the college campus for uninterrupted power supply.
  • Establishment of Employment Cell and Placement Cell.

The students from lower financial status i.e. OBC and ST are given scholarships through Department of Social Welfare and all the inmates of the Hostel are given Hostel stipend of Rs. 1500/-pm. So they can attain better quality of life.
